Red Hat OpenShift – Enterprise Product Design

I created interaction and visual design assets to launch a new product called OpenShift.io, a cloud-based developer tool for creating, managing, building and analyzing applications. My work also included the creation & UX testing of new components, which were added to the PatternFly design system.

Skills used: user experience, web design, interaction design, visual design, user testing

The Challenge

Create a minimal viable product that could be launched at Red Hat’s annual event, the Red Hat Summit. The project sprint team was tasked with the challenge of creating interaction & visual design flows, specs, & assets for key user interaction flows – including, registration, login, the home environment, setup, & analytics reporting.

User & Business Goals

User Goals included:

  • Quickly & easily develop applications online

  • View analytics of application

  • Collaborate with global developer community

  • Project manage app development process

Business Goals were:

  • Increase awareness of & engagement with Red Hat’s developer tools

  • Increase positive Red Hat brand sentiment in the open source community

  • Increase the RedHat Developer Program user base

  • Launch new product using Red Hat’s Open Source design system PatternFly.

Early Considerations – Design System

To meet our MVP timeline, my first step was to evaluate our design system, PatternFly, to understand what components could be repurposed and what new components may need to be created from scratch. While the design system was not as robust as it is today, I was able to use early system components such as the wizard, lists, alerts, buttons, input fields, and banners. As part of this work, I also identified and designed new components that were added to the design system which is used across all Red Hat Enterprise products.

Red Hat OpenShift.io MVP

As we received customer feedback, the UX and UI of Openshift continued to be refined. While the core user flows remained, the functionality continued to expand.

Success Metrics

“OpenShift.io was clearly built for team collaboration, with support for various development methodologies and philosophies. It features all the necessary tools for the non-coders on the team (think project managers and business analysts) to keep track of the state of a given project.

Frederic Lardinois, Tech Crunch

The project launched on time at the 2018 Red Hat Summit and received positive reviews. The team was able to host a live demo and run user tests onsite to evaluate performance and gather feedback. Over the last 6+ years, OpenShift has become one of Red Hat’s largest product offerings with global, enterprise customers like Delta Airlines, Bank of America, and Leidos.
